Green Tea Helps Prevent Prostate Cancer

Studies have shown that those with high levels of Vitamin in their blood can be expected to have 60-70% less prostate cancer. This study gives another tools men can use to help prevent the number 2 cancer in men, Green Tea.  Considering Green Tea supplementation would be a good idea as drinking up to 12 cups a day would be difficult for most people, unless it was brewed an drank as a cold beverage.  For more about Vitamin D and Prostate Cancer, I recommend Vitamin D Prescription- The Healing Power of the Sun & How It Can Save Your Life by Dr. Eric Madrid

Green tea ‘slows prostate cancer’

A chemical found in green tea appears to slow the progression of prostate cancer, a study has suggested.

Green tea has been linked to a positive effect on a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

The research, in the US journal Cancer Prevention Research, found a significant fall in certain markers which indicate cancer development.

A UK charity said the tea might help men manage low-risk tumours.

This could mean completely avoiding, in some cases, any of the more usual medical interventions and their associated side effects
John Neate, The Prostate Cancer Charity

Although previous studies have shown benefits from drinking green tea – including some positive findings in relation to prostate cancer, there have been mixed results.

In this study, Philadelphia-based researchers tested a compound called Polyphenon E.

They were looking for a number of biomarkers – molecules – including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) which are indicators of developing cancer.

They also looked for prostate specific antigen (PSA) – a protein only found in the prostate. Levels can rise if cancer is present.

’12 cups’

The study included 26 men, aged 41 to 72 years, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and who were scheduled for radical prostate surgery.

Patients took four capsules containing Polyphenon E for an average of 34 days, up until the day before surgery – the equivalent of around 12 cups of normally brewed concentrated green tea.

The study found a significant reduction in levels of HGF, VEGF and PSA, with some patients demonstrating reductions of more than 30%.

Dr James Cardelli, from the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, who led the study, said the compound, which was provided by the company Polyphenon Pharma, “may have the potential to lower the incidence and slow the progression of prostate cancer.”

There were only a few reported side effects associated with this study, and liver function remained normal….read more here…

Cancer protection secret revealed

Cancer protection secret revealed

Scientists say they have discovered a missing link in the way cells protect themselves against cancer.

They have uncovered how cells switch a gene called p53, which can block the development of tumours, on and off.

The researchers say the finding has important implications for cancer treatment and diagnosis.

The study, published in Genes And Development, was carried out by teams of scientists in Singapore and the University of Dundee.

The p53 gene, first discovered 30 years ago, plays a vital role in keeping the body healthy by ordering damaged cells to commit suicide, or by stopping them dividing while key repair work is carried out.In half of all cancers the gene is either damaged or inactive, giving damaged cells a free rein to keep dividing and form cancer.

In the latest study, the scientists used a genetic trick to make zebrafish turn green when the p53 gene was switched on to explore the way it was regulated.

They found that the p53 gene makes not only the well-established p53 protein, but also an alternative “control switch” variation of the p53 protein – known as an isoform.

Radiation doses

Normally zebrafish, which carry the same p53 gene as humans, can survive low doses of radiation, which causes damage to the DNA, because the gene steps in to repair that damage.

But no such repair took place in zebrafish without the isoform switch, and they died after radiation exposure.

The researchers said this proved that the switch played a crucial role in enabling p53 to do its repair work.

Lead researcher Professor Sir David Lane, said: “The function of p53 is critical to the way that many cancer treatments kill cells since radiotherapy and chemotherapy act in part by triggering cell suicide in response to DNA damage.

“So understanding more about how this gene is controlled in cells is really important in finding ways to prevent cells from turning cancerous.”

Lesley Walker, Cancer Research UK’s director of cancer information, said: “This is a really exciting study which improves our understanding of how the p53 gene works.

“Discovering how it is regulated will have incredibly important implications in the development of better drugs and ways to diagnose cancer.”

Benefits of Tunguska Mist Adaptogens

In June, 1908- there was a mysterious blast in the Tunguska region, in the  Siberian plateau.  Most Scientists believe this blast  was from a meteor burning up in the earth’s atmosphere,  just prior to hitting  planet earth.  One hundred years later,  many  are realizing the health benefits from this event.  Plant life near the epicenter of Tunguska is prospering.  Did  these plants have some unique ability to adapt and survive after enormous environmental stressors?  Are there other species of plant herbs which possess the same ability? The ability to adapt to stress?  If so- how can they help human health?

Wikipedia states: “In 1947, Nikolai Lazarev defined an adaptogen as an agent that allows the body to counter adverse physical, chemical, or biological stressors by raising nonspecific resistance toward such stress, thus allowing the organism to “adapt” to the stressful circumstances.

Human stress is a well known cause of  disease.   Adaptogens are believed to help  your body adapt to the stresses faced throughout the day.  Adaptation is a major way the body fights disease causing stress.

Herbal adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Diseases and conditions caused or made worse with  stress include: Angina, asthma, cancer, heart disease,  common cold, depression and anxiety, overweight, diabetes, tension headaches , hypertension , weakened immune suppression, Irritable bowel disease, heartburn and ulcer.

Most adaptogens fall into the following categories-

Ayurvedic Herbs:

  1. Amla
  2. Ashwagandha or Indian Winter Cherry (Withania somnifera)
  3. Guduchi
  4. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum),
  5. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
  6. Shatavari
  7. Shilajit

Chinese Herbs:

  1. Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
  2. Korean Red Ginseng (Asian Red Ginseng)
  3. Astragalus(Astragalus Membranaceus)
  4. Codonopsis
  5. Cordyceps
  6. He Shou Wu (Fo-ti)
  7. Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
  8. Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza Uralensis)
  9. Goji Wolfberry (Lycium Barbarum)
  10. Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)
  11. Chinese Magnolia Vine (Schizandra Chinensis)
  12. Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum)
  13. Shilajit (Asphaltum)
  14. Prince Seng
  15. Schisandra

European Herbs:

  1. Russian Mountain Ash (Sorbus Aucuparia)
  2. Chaga Mushroom (Inonotus Obliquus)

Western Herbs

  1. American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)
  2. Rhaponticum
  3. Manchurian Thorn Tree (Aralia Mandchurica)
  4. Golden Root (Rhodiola Rosea)

All Adaptogens  are herbs, but not all herbs are adaptogens. Adaptogens have the following qualities-

1. It must  be non-toxic

2. It must have an overall normalizing effect, improving all kinds of conditions and aggravating none.

3. It must increase the body’s resistance to adverse influences, not by a specific action but by a wide range of physical, chemical, and biochemical factors.

There are many ways to increase the amount of adaptogens in your life.  From the chart below, we see that pills have the least absorption while sprays have the most. TunguskaMist, an oral spray with adaptogens, has maximal absorption.  There are spray specifically formulated for various needs. TunguskaMist has formulated adaptogens for insomonia, immune strengthening, virility and more.

Exercise and Sleep Help Fight Cancer

Boston – A recent study has shown that women who exercise regularly and get a full eight hours of sleep each night helps to bring down the risk of getting cancer.

Lisa Nemcheck, a breast cancer survivor says that she has come to know that exercise and sleep is helping her remain cancer free. She says, “I recently joined a gym. I started swimming, and I exercise five times a week. I listen to my body, and my body tells me that I do have to rest.”

It has been discovered that regular exercise can help to bring down the risk of cancer in women by 20 percent in a study done by the National Cancer Institue. The fact that exercise has many positive effects on your body such as body weight, immune system functions and hormone functions makes researchers believe that exercise is extremely helpful in reducing the risk of cancer even though there hasn’t been an association between exercise and cancer that has been proven.

Dr. Susan Boolbol says, “This is one of the first studies that has shown that in women who do not have a history of breast cancer, they can actually reduce their risk by exercising.”

Research also shows that even if a women exercises it won’t help unless she gets a full nights sleep also. Sleeping and exercising go hand in hand. Without the proper amount of sleep the exercise doesn’t really matter when reducing cancer risk because it fights the benefits of the exercise. It has been shown that inadequate sleep can actually increase the risk of cancer by 50 percent….read more here

F.D.A Reviewing Deaths in Anemia Drug Study

September 27, 2008

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Federal health officials said Friday that they were reviewing a higher rate of deaths among patients treated with a Johnson & Johnson anemia drug in a German study of stroke patients.

Sixteen percent of patients who were treated with the drug, Eprex, had died three months after the study began, compared with 9 percent who were given a placebo, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.

The study was testing whether Eprex could improve brain function in stroke patients, an unapproved use of the drug.

The 522 patients were given relatively high doses of Eprex for three days or a placebo. Most were not anemic, the drug agency said.

Eprex is known generically as epoetin alfa. Johnson & Johnson also sells epoetin alfa under the name Procrit. Amgen sells a version under the name Epogen.

The blockbuster drugs are part of a class called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, or ESAs, which are approved for treating patients with kidney disease and cancer. Read more here……….
