Western Diet Increases Heart Attack Risk by 30%

Western Diet Boosts Global Heart Attack Risk 30%

MONDAY, Oct. 20 (HealthDay News) — The fried foods, salty snacks and meats that are staples of the Western diet account for about 30 percent of heart attack risk across the world, a new report suggests.

Meanwhile, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, the so-called “Prudent” diet, is tied a low risk of heart attack, according to the study, published in the Oct. 21 issue of Circulation.

The research, which looked at dietary habits in 52 countries, found people who ate a Western diet had a 35 percent greater risk of having a heart attack compared to those who ate little or no fried foods and meat. Those who followed a “Prudent” diet had a 30 percent lower risk of heart attack compared to those who went light on fruits and vegetables.

The authors also looked at an “Oriental” diet, rich in tofu, soy and other sauces, and found it did not increase or decrease the risk of a heart attack.

Previous studies have reached similar conclusions about the “Prudent” and Western diet in the United States and Europe, but did not include the Oriental pattern of eating. While some components of the Oriental diet may protect against heart trouble, the higher sodium content of sauces counter that benefit.

“This study indicates that the same relationships that are observed in Western countries exist in different regions of the world,” study senior author Salim Yusuf, a professor of medicine at McMaster University and director of the Population Health Research Institute at Hamilton Health Sciences in Ontario, said in an American Heart Association news release.

The Canadian researchers analyzed risk factors in food choices and the risk of heart attack in about 16,000 people in 52 countries. Almost 6,000 people had heart attacks, while the rest had no known heart disease.

Scientists find gene that accounts for white skin..

Scientists Find A DNA Change That Accounts For White Skin

By Rick Weiss

Scientists said yesterday that they have discovered a tiny genetic mutation that largely explains the first appearance of white skin in humans tens of thousands of years ago, a finding that helps solve one of biology’s most enduring mysteries and illuminates one of humanity’s greatest sources of strife.

The work suggests that the skin-whitening mutation occurred by chance in a single individual after the first human exodus from Africa, when all people were brown-skinned. That person’s offspring apparently thrived as humans moved northward into what is now Europe, helping to give rise to the lightest of the world’s races.

Leaders of the study, at Penn State University, warned against interpreting the finding as a discovery of “the race gene.” Race is a vaguely defined biological, social and political concept, they noted, and skin color is only part of what race is — and is not…..read more here…

A New Gold Rush- www.goldprospectors.org

A new gold rush

ITALIAN BAR — In the cold deep canyons of the Stanislaus River, James Anderson isn’t worried about the stock market. The weak dollar doesn’t bother him. Slumping home prices? No problem. He’s got no house but a bed in the back of his 33-year-old Dodge van.

Gold prices are up — and for Anderson and the legions of other prospectors scouring California’s old mining sites, that justifies the tedious and backbreaking work.

“When you rinse it away and see the gold sitting there, it sends something through your blood,” said Anderson, 68, who lives on Social Security and whatever nuggets, flakes and dust he finds in this rugged Mother Lode riverbed, near the town of Columbia in northwestern Tuolumne County. “It’s like an adrenaline shot.”

Stock market volatility, high metal prices and the popularity of outdoor adventure has triggered California’s biggest mining boom in three decades. As gold more than doubled in the last decade — now approaching $800 an ounce — Americans are returning to the foothills, buying picks, filing mining claims and sifting for their fortune, though few ever get rich or even earn enough to pay for the gas to cover the trek.

“Gold’s real. It is tangible, as opposed to what’s in a bank. Who knows what will happen to it there?” said Dr. Eric Madrid, a Temecula physician who left the stock market and put his savings into gold coins.

Madrid was among 80 members of the Gold Prospectors Association.…..read rest of story..

RFK on the “Vaccine Autism Coverup”

Become informed- talk to your doctor about  vaccinations and your children… I do not recommend anyone avoid vaccinations- simply make informed choices.  Evidence shows that vaccinations have great public health benefits but some children may be sensitive to added preservatives put in the vaccines. Fortunately, these preservatives are not required for the vaccine to work.
