Try a tanning bed if you can't get out in the sun! Also I used Replesta to jumpstart my D3 deficiency. I used 50000 iu once a week for 8 weeks (loading dose) and now I take 50000 iu two times per month (maintenance dose) - (I also had the option to take 2000 iu daily). Haven't gotten a blood test lately, but I feel much better so hopefully my levels have gone up!

I have suffered very low Vit. D for 4 years as well as symptoms of fibromyalgia/ RA/Chonic Fatigue. My Rheuma has had me on calcium supplements as well as 5,000 units of Vitamin D daily, but my low Vit. D level will not budge at all even when it's been the middle of summer and I've been on supplements. I was tried gluten free diet to see if that raised it and it did not. Any thoughts?

Dear Hilary
Try some saturated fats in butter, cream, fatty meats. These provide the cholesterol so your body can make vitamin D, absorb vitamin D. The fats act as antimicrobial properties killing off fungus, Candida albicans and borrelia bacteria. DO YOU HAVE LYME DISEASE? TICK BITE? LONG GRASS? BITTEN YEARS AGO? GET OFF GRAIN AND BEANS AND FRUIT! EAT NUTS/FATTY LAMB AND FATTY BEEF - MEAT/SEAFOOD/FISH/EGGS/GREEN VEGGIES/GARLIC/give up everything but these foods. Try sauna (heat to kill your mysterious disease/exercise when you gain back your strength). Do not go half way but the whole way with this diet, it works. Herbs that may also help are burdock root, barberry root, Pau D'arco, NOT FISH OIL, garlic/onion.
Kick ass.... Go to Lyme survivior. com Becareful with vitamin D, and read about Lyme disease. Most tests from doctors do not show it up, so check the symptoms , try the treatments with herbs and a high fat, low carb diet as mentioned above. I know the pain. Are you crying, having rages, painful jaw (TMJ) did it come on suddenly with a flu symptom/rash? (bulls eye rash in on;ly 30% of patients) antibiotics do not get rid of it all. Do you get numb hands/feet, the most terrible extreme burning pain to the point you can't walk. Do you feel helpless, feel no one really cares/understands? I am here for Lyme patients who can't take any more and want help desperately. Are you bed ridden or were you? Has someone convinced you , you need a low fat diet? are you on the skinny chiciken and veggies (GET ON THE FAT AND DROP THE GRAIN, BEANS, FRUIT!) Drop the fish oil untill you have recovered and stop trying to alkalise. Do you have memory problems, balance issues? This is Lyme disease. Come of the coffee/tea and drink more water. Hot baths and epson salts are a good start. Diet is 100% crucial. It will save your but... it is a paleolithic diet without the fruit because you may have an infection. Fat has antimicrobial properties. For further details about this diet/lyme disease or save your butt regime and get a life! See here, I can't be bothered to write it out a thousand times:

Dr Madrid, I came across this page seeking answers for my mother-in-law, a long-time fibro sufferer. Please, please, please update us on your work with the fibro-D3 connection. (My hunch is that changing from D2 to D3 would bring your success rate up considerably.) Do tell! Thank you!

Just wanted to update my post from August, 2009. I have been consistently taking 4000 U Vitamin D3 and have still not been having the pain. I have even been drinking Diet Coke (I know I shouldn't) occasionally and not have the pain return. I have even had them several days in a row with no ill effects. Vitamin D3 has provided a tremendous improvement in my life!

About a month ago I asked my doctor about Vitamin D after a friend told me his wife was trying it for her FMS. Like all of us with this terrible chronic disease, the pain and emotional turmoil has left me feeling extremely helpless. Nothing consistently works! Although I have suffered from fatigue and pain since a child (I am now 34) my parents were continually told those symptoms were likely due to having Hepatitis A at age 5 followed by a head injury at age 7. I have been called a hypochondriac for as long as I can remember. Now that I am an adult and was officially diagnosed with depression I can say with certainty I've been depressed for almost 30 years.

I could write a novel here about my journey with FMS, but I will spare you the frustration of hearing about one doctor after another saying either "I don't know" or "you have to learn how to deal with the pain." In summary, I am a single mother of two young daughters and currently disabled for the 2nd time since 2007. A year ago I was working on a Master's Degree and started an amazing job. After 3 months I became too sick to work again. I've been under the care of two excellent medical professionals for almost 2 years. Two rheumatologists have separately diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia since 2006. The reality is that the lack of medical research and knowledge in the area of chronic pain & fatigue denies its patients a quality life. The GREAT NEWS is we have hope for proper treatment.

My doctor started me on 50,000 IU of Vitamin D twice a week in mid-December. I misread the dose & took 2 per day until I had taken 6 capsules. Other than a bad stomach ache I had more energy the following 3 days than in a long, long time. After reading this blog I plan to ask him to consider Vitamin D3 instead. HOPE!! If you haven't heard about The Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, NV I highly recommend checking out their website. www.wpinstitute.org

I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon this blog & look forward to keeping up with everyone's progress taking Vitamin D3!

Make sure that you take D3 and not the prescription 50,000 IU that a doctor might prescribe. The 50,000 IU one is D2, which will not be helpful in the long term. Also if you have a deficiency, taking 10,000 D3 is a good way to get back in the normal range, at least above 50 ng/ml. Once you are in the normal range, you can see what will keep you there--it might be 2000 IU a day or 5000.

Your symptoms sound like mine. I've had fibro type symptoms for over 20 years. Dx finally a couple of years ago. Dr. wanted to put me on an antidepressant for it as it can be effective, but I declined. Recently, fibro pain and fatigue was getting much worse, and my sinuses were killing me. I quit all dairy (I love all dairy), started taking a decongestant twice a day, and started sitting in the sun and taking Vit D3, 2,000 IU daily. In the first two days I noticed a huge difference in my pain level. My pain is about 1/2 or less already (five days in), strength has increased, energy has increased, and I feel SO much better overall. I am reading all I can about the connection between fibromyalgia and Vit D/sunlight. I live in Florida but get no real sun because it's hot a lot, and my fatigue and pain made me want to not walk or get outdoors much. My diet is good, but I can't get enough Vit D that way. We really need to be spreading the word. I am, but some people just turn it off. Thanks for listening. Lynn
