Chantix, made by Pfizer (makers of Viagra) is a drug that helps smokers become quitters. This is not just any drug, but a drug that if successful can help decrease the 500,000 deaths each year related to tobacco smoke. Studies have shown up to 44% quit rate at 3 months, which is far better than any other option out there. I have had numerous patients quick smoking after being put on this medicine. I was shocked and dismayed to hear there may be a problem. However, it appears the FDA is looking into reports of “erratic behavior” and suicidal tendencies. As unfortunate as it is that there have been problems, preventing 500,000 deaths each year is monumental and should be top priority. I look forward to seeing what becomes of this.
